Giuseppe Verdi's most popular stage work is a gripping drama about an impossible love in times of war. The slave Aida loves the enemy commander Radames. But the pharaoh's daughter Amneris also has her eye on the army commander. The fatal love triangle ends fatally - Aida and Radames are walled up alive in a pyramid and die together. Dietrich Hilsdorf's production has been a cult performance at the Aalto for many years: turgid theatre to Verdi's passionate music.
